How can a stone edge or a tended flame hold knowledge outside one brain?

A stone edge made on purpose holds the result of several practiced steps, but the stone cannot teach those steps by itself. Someone must show, copy, correct, and adjust. Fire is similar. Keeping glowing embers alive requires knowledge of fuel, weather, and timing. Together, tools and fire expanded what groups could cut, cook, carry, warm, protect, and do after sunset.

Stone toolmaking reaches back more than 3 million years. Clear evidence for fire controlled again and again becomes common much later. The shapes of breaks, chips knocked away, worn edges, and what lies nearby help separate tools from accidental stones. Burned ground can come from wildfire, so repeated fireplaces make a stronger case. The deepest invention is shared memory: a skill can outlast one learner when a group practices and teaches it. Without that chain, even a useful tradition can disappear.
